Bred to Hunt
Hunting Golden Retrievers
Golden Retrievers were created as hunting dogs. Field-bred lines keep that retrieving desire, bird sense, and willingness to work with a handler. We breed Goldens that can hunt upland and waterfowl, then settle at home.

Are Golden Retrievers Good Hunting Dogs?
Yes—if you choose field lines. A hunting Golden should mark a bird, take cover, enter cold water, and bring game back with a soft mouth. They need a nose for scenting, enough drive to keep working, and the biddability to take direction when the retrieve gets hard.
That is upland birds and waterfowl. One well-bred Golden can do both when the pedigree still cares about the original job.
What Makes a Great Hunting Golden
Looks do not make a hunting dog. We look for a handful of traits that show up on real days in the field:
- ✦Drive — a genuine desire to find, pick up, and return birds
- ✦Marking — watching a fall and taking an efficient line to it
- ✦Nose — using scent when the bird is hidden in cover
- ✦Cooperation — wanting to work with the handler, not only for itself
- ✦An off switch — intensity while working, then the ability to settle at home

How We Breed for the Field
Every pairing starts with the field. Our sires and dams come from proven working lines with hunt test titles, and we choose pairings for natural bird drive, a soft mouth, strong marking, and a cooperative, biddable attitude.
Every breeding dog is health tested before we pair them — hips, elbows, heart, eyes, and a genetic panel. We want dogs that hunt hard all day and settle in at home at night.
Trained by a Professional Bird Dog Trainer
Tyce Erickson runs Utah Bird Dog Training, where he trains pointing dogs and retrievers for hunters across the West. He has been training dogs professionally since 2008.
That experience shapes every pairing we make: we know what a dog needs to bring to the field because we see it every day in training.

Upland vs Waterfowl: Can One Golden Do Both?
A versatile hunting Golden should handle both. Upland work asks for range, nose, and the desire to hunt cover. Waterfowl work asks for marking, a clean water entry, and the toughness to retrieve in cold conditions.
We are not trying to produce specialists that can only do one job. The Golden we want can walk a pheasant field in the morning and sit a duck blind in the afternoon, then ride home in the truck and settle.

Getting a Hunting Golden Puppy
We place puppies with hunting families across the country. We prefer that families pick up their puppy in person at our farm in West Mountain, Utah, or we're happy to arrange to meet you at the Salt Lake City airport. If you'd rather not travel, you're welcome to hire a puppy nanny or transport service to bring your puppy home.
