Choosing a puppy is a big decision, and finding the right match is crucial for both the puppy and your family. At Field Bred Golden Retrievers, we understand that every family is unique, and we’re committed to placing our puppies in homes where they will thrive. Our matching process goes beyond simply selling puppies; it’s about building lasting connections and ensuring a lifetime of happiness for both dog and owner.
Why Matching Matters
Field-Bred Golden Retrievers are known for their intelligence, energy, and trainability. While these qualities make them fantastic companions, they also mean they require specific needs to be met. A high-drive puppy bred for intense fieldwork might not be the best fit for a family seeking a more laid-back companion. Conversely, a less energetic puppy might not thrive in a home with a dedicated hunter. Our matching process takes these individual needs into account, ensuring a harmonious and fulfilling relationship between dog and owner.
Our Ideal Client: The Versatile Family
We understand that many families are looking for a dog that can excel in multiple roles. Our ideal client is an active family that enjoys occasional hunting trips but also prioritizes having a loving and well-mannered companion at home. They appreciate the athleticism and trainability of a Field-Bred Golden Retriever but also value a dog with an "off-switch"—one that can transition seamlessly from a day in the field to relaxing by the fireplace. We specifically breed for this versatility, focusing on dogs with a strong work ethic and natural hunting instincts, but also with a temperament that allows them to be calm and affectionate family members. We understand that even the most dedicated hunters aren't in the field 365 days a year, so we prioritize breeding dogs that can happily adapt to a variety of activities and environments.

Our Matching Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
Our matching process is carefully designed to assess both the puppies' individual personalities and the needs and lifestyles of prospective owners. Here’s how it works:

  • Early Socialization and Observation: From the moment our puppies are born, they are immersed in a nurturing environment. We prioritize early socialization, exposing them to various sights, sounds, and experiences. This helps them develop into well-adjusted and confident dogs. Throughout their early weeks, we carefully observe each puppy's individual temperament, noting their energy levels, play styles, and interactions with their littermates.
  • Temperament Testing: At approximately 6.5-7 weeks of age, we conduct formal temperament testing. This involves a series of structured exercises designed to assess each puppy's:
    • Social interaction: How they interact with people.
    • Confidence: How they react to new environments and stimuli.
    • Prey drive: Their natural instinct to chase and retrieve.
    • Touch sensitivity: How they respond to handling.
  • This testing provides valuable insights into each puppy's personality and helps us predict their future behavior.
  • Getting to Know You: While we are getting to know the puppies, we also want to get to know you! We take the time to talk with each prospective family, asking questions about their:
    • Lifestyle: How active are they? What kind of living environment do they have?
    • Experience with dogs: Have they owned dogs before? What kind of training experience do they have?
    • Expectations: What are they looking for in a dog? What activities do they plan to do with their new companion?
    • The Perfect Match: Combining our observations of the puppies with our understanding of your family’s lifestyle, we make the best possible match.
    • Hunting Homes: If you’re a dedicated hunter or field trial enthusiast, we’ll match you with a puppy that demonstrates a stronger prey drive, higher energy, and a natural retrieving instinct. These puppies are eager to work and thrive on having a "job" to do.
    • Active Family Homes: If you’re seeking an active companion for hiking, running, swimming, or other outdoor adventures, we’ll match you with a puppy that has a good balance of energy and calmness. These puppies are still active and trainable but also possess an "off switch" that allows them to relax and enjoy family time.
    • First-Time Dog Owners: If you’re new to dog ownership, we’ll carefully consider your experience level and match you with a puppy that is more forgiving and easier to train. We’ll also provide ongoing support and guidance to help you navigate the exciting journey of raising your new companion.

Our Commitment to You
Our commitment doesn't end when you take your puppy home. We offer ongoing support and guidance to help you and your new companion thrive. We are always available to answer questions, offer training advice, and provide resources to help you navigate any challenges that may arise.
The Importance of Responsible Breeding:
Our matching process is just one aspect of our commitment to responsible breeding. We also prioritize
  • Health Testing: Our breeding dogs undergo rigorous health testing to ensure they are free from genetic conditions that could be passed on to their puppies.
  • Careful Selection: We carefully select our breeding pairs based on temperament, health, and conformation to produce healthy, well-adjusted puppies.
  • Ongoing Support: We are always available to answer questions and provide support to our puppy owners.
Finding the perfect puppy is a journey, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way!
